Prenatal Course: a necessity?

Being first-time parents, we know we have a lot to learn. Thanks to the internet, all the information we could have ever dreamed of is on standby ready for us. Even though, we still decided to join a prenatal course to learn the basics of pregnancy and child care. It was important that we both would attend (not just mama) and decided to join a course in Singapore.

All birthing hospitals in Singapore offer prenatal courses (you do not have to be a patient to join the course) as well as private institutions. The courses can range from basic to super fancy where daddy gets to enjoy a beer and mama a Perrier with lemon - so do the price tags with courses up to 750 S$ (7,500,000 Rp.). We decided to keep it less fancy and more medical and as patients of KK Hospital we decided to do the course there for 200 S$ (2,000,000 Rp.). The course covers everything from taking care of yourself during pregnancy, medication and nutrition, preparing for labor in all stages, pain relief during labor, breastfeeding, child care and taking your bundle of joy home. (it really covers it all even how to admit to a hospital, breastfeeding massages and how to save your chocking baby! It is highly recommended for parents but also helpers, nannys, babysitters to attend a children first-aid course)

Do you need to take a prenatal course?

It depends on you and how you feel. If you have post-birth your family or a live-in helper to give you a hand and teach you all of the nitty gritty then you might be well off without the course. But some parents prefer to do it all alone and some do not have another option than doing it all by themselves, for them I would highly recommend to do the course. Our recent instagram poll has shown that 62% of mamas attended a prenatal course.

For me personally it helps hearing it all from a midwife or nurse face to face instead of a youtube video. It is also great to be able to direct all your questions to a real person instead of a forum chat. I do enjoy the course at KK, the nurses and midwives who conduct the course are so loving and send such positive vibes. It is also a great thing to do as a couple together to prepare for your bundle of joy.
